About Model of Jerusalem
The Model of Jerusalem in the Second Temple Period, a miniature model at the Israel Museum, represents the city of Jerusalem at the height of its glory, shortly before its destruction by the Romans in 70 AD.
Construction of Model
The model was designed and built in the 1960s by Professor Michael Avi Yonah, a leading scholar in ancient Jerusalem. His design is based on descriptions from Jewish sources, the writings of the historian Flavius Josephus, archaeological finds from Jerusalem and other Roman cities, and the Bible.
Description of Model
The model measures some 2,000 m2 and is constructed in a scale of 1:50. At the heart of the model stands the Temple Mount and the Herodian Temple. The style of the buildings and the layout of the streets were greatly influenced by the Greco-Roman culture. The model also features several notable structures such as Antonia Fortress, Southern Wall and Eastern Gate.
- Hans Kroch, the owner of the Holy Land Hotel, commissioned the famous model in memory of his son Jacob who fell in the 1948 War of Independence.
- When the time came to move the model to Israel Museum, the model was sawn into 100 parts and later resembled in the Israel Museum campus.
- The model was constructed at the time when Israelis had no access to the Old City of Jerusalem, during the Jordanian Occupation from 1948 to 1967.
