About Assisi
Assisi, a charming medieval town in Umbria, is celebrated worldwide for its rich spiritual heritage, invaluable art, and timeless charm.
Rocca Maggiore Hilltop Fortress
Perched above Assisi, the 14th-century Rocca Maggiore fortress was built by Cardinal Albornoz to assert control over the region. Its imposing towers provide stunning panoramic views of the town and the surrounding Umbrian valleys.
Basilica di San Francesco
The Basilica di San Francesco, built between 1228and 1253, is a cornerstone of Franciscan spirituality. Its Upper Church displays Giotto’s 28 vibrant frescoes of St. Francis’s life, while the Lower Church features Gothic and pre-Renaissance masterpieces. Beneath lies the monumental tomb of St. Francis.
Basilica di Santa Chiara
Dedicated to St. Clare, a follower of St. Francis and co-founder the Order of Poor Clares, this 13th-century church features a distinctive pink-and-white façade made from Subasio stone. Her remains are housed in the crypt beneath the main altar.
- The Porziuncola, a tiny chapel where St. Francis founded the Franciscan order, is uniquely enclosed within the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
- Assisi is renowned for Umbrian culinary delights, including traditional cured meats and artisanal chocolates.
- The remains of St. Francis were hidden after his death to prevent theft and rediscovered intact in 1818, a rare preservation among saintly relics.
